Whitby is the perfect day out it has beautiful Blue Flag beaches and many attractions, Whitby wallows in history, including fishing, the jet industry (did you know that it's still the best place in the world to find the gleaming black gemstone so beloved by the Victorians?) and Captain Cook (who was born nearby, and whose famous ship the Endeavour was Whitby-built). And its literary connections - Bram Stoker's famous Dracula features the town, with the vampire first coming ashore here from Transylvania in the guise of a black dog. If you are feeling energetic, climb the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey from the town, these were the steps that Bram Stoker's mysterious animal bounded up after it leapt to shore from the deserted ship. Enjoy exhilarating views every way you turn from this natural vantage point, across the harbour and town, and into the countryside beyond. Immerse yourself in 13th-century gothic splendour, and roam the ruins of the abbey church, to discover remnants of richly carved details and mouldings.
